ABOUT COURCHEVEL, FRANCE

The name Courchevel has an intriguing connotation and some surprising historical roots for one of the world’s most opulent vacation resorts. Courchevel was the country’s very first purpose-built ski resort. Every element of the ski resort, including the name, was methodically prepared to assure its success.

The initial two alternatives were ‘Les Tovets’ and ‘Courchevel,’ with the latter being chosen due to its perceived marketability. The name was previously taken from a nearby tiny hamlet. The term is derived from two French words: ‘écorcher’, which means to skin or flay, and ‘veau,’ which means veal or calf.

While Courchevel has become synonymous with luxury, its history reflects the area’s modest farming origins. Prior to 1942, when bold ideas to create the ski resort were conceived, the region was largely deserted, with the exception of a few farmers and shepherds during the summer months.

The only settlements were a collection of mountain refuges and tiny hamlets scattered throughout the hills. Between 1942 and 1946, the French tourism board promoted ideas to build a super ski resort complete with a massive interconnected ski area, maintained pistes, and even the notion of ski-in/ski-out.
