Cessna is world-renowned for its safety and dependability and the Citation CJ4 exemplifies  this standard, and so shares numerous characteristics with its forerunners as the Citation CJ3 and CJ2. The CJ4 offers countless new features and performance increases while maintaining the highest level of quality and reliability Citation has become known for over the last century. The 9th generation of the Citation series, the CJ4, was announced in October of 2006, take its first prototype flight in May of 2008, first production flight on August 19th, 2008, and its first delivery completed in 2010. The CJ4 would improve upon and enhance the design, modifications, and advancements achieved in the CJ3+ project. And on February 9th, 2021, Textron Aviation announced the latest version in the C525C series, the Citation CJ4 Gen2, which upgrades the flight deck to the Garmin G3000 avionics suite and updates the interior with similar stylings to the M2.

The interior of the CJ4 is thoughtfully designed to provide an illusion of additional space by the use of seamless wall panels, strategic placement of lighting, and mirrors. The cabin boasts dimensions of 17 feet 4 inches (5.28 m) long, 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 m) tall, 4 feet 10 inches (1.47 m) wide, with a total cabin volume of 311 cubic feet (8.81 cu m). It accommodates six to eight guests and features a side-facing two-place divan as well as a fully enclosed lavatory in the aft of the aircraft. Passengers will appreciate the superior cabin entertainment options compared to other similar private jets as the CJ4’s are equipped with the most technologically advanced entertainment management systems to keep you and your group entertained even on the longest of flights. All seats in the cabin swivel and track forward/aft and inboard/outboard, while the two forward-facing center seats are also on the track. Two bi-fold tables are located between the double-club seats, coupled with small tables for the single seats behind the club. To expand the amount of room available in the club seat area, the rear-most seats can be repositioned further back. The additional length on the CJ4 has been utilized in the flight deck and refreshment center. Between the door and the flight deck is a modest but well-equipped refreshment center with an ice drawer, coffee container, disposable cup dispenser, trash container, bottled water and can storage, as well as additional storage for all your favorite snacks. The Citation CJ4 has a large baggage capacity of 77 cubic feet (2.18 cu m), with an interior capacity of 6 cubic feet (0.17 cu m) and an external compartment of 71 cubic feet (2.01 cu m).

Another notable change to the CJ4 is the addition of the Williams International FJ44-4 rear-mounted engines. The FJ44 has been used on all Citation series jets thus far, however the FJ44-4 model is hands down, the largest and most powerful version in the series. The FJ44-4 has the highest thrust output in the series, each producing 3,620 pounds of thrust at takeoff (Totaling: 7,240 lbs. of thrust). The CJ4’s engines thrust it to 45,000 feet (13,716 m) in just under 27 minutes and will cruise at speeds up to 451 knots (519 mph / 835 km/h). The CJ4’s runway performance has again been approved upon making it very agile at sea level as well as increasing performance during hot-and-high conditions (hot temperatures and high altitude).

The most noticeable upgrade to the CJ4 is in the cockpit, where the ProLine 21 Avionics suite with four 8×10 inch AMLCDs takes center stage. These displays let pilots to quickly access broadcast graphical weather, approach plans, electronic charts, and other situational awareness requirements. Additionally, the Collins FMS-3000 is connected to Dual Control Display Units (CDUs) to allow pilots to focus more. When necessary, the autopilot and emergency descent modes immediately activate. The Pro Line 21 system is advanced and capable of performing all functions required of a modern business jet. The CJ4’s is equipped with a Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics suite, which has been upgraded to include FMS (flight management system) v4.0 with WAAS (wide-area augmentation system) capability and IFIS (integrated flight information system) v6.0 with improved display mobility, temporary flight restrictions, and winds aloft information. The CJ4 comes equipped with the Collins Venue cabin management/entertainment system, which includes a Blu-ray media center and SiriusXM. he CJ4 has a monitor mounted on the forward bulkhead, two monitors on the side ledges, and environmental system controls. All lighting in the interior is LED, and each seat features controls for the cabin management and entertainment systems. To stay connected while in flight, the CJ4 can be equipped with  Gogo’s air-to-ground technology or Cobham Inmarsat SwiftBroadband satcom.

The updated Citation CJ4 Gen2 was announced in February 2021 and was available for immediate delivery. The Gen2 upgrades are mostly in regards to passenger comfort and flexibility. Cessna reimagined the interior with increased ergonomics and enhanced storage choices in mind. Thanks to the cabin management system going wireless, passengers may now control lighting, window shades, and cabin temperature via their smartphones, in addition to streaming preloaded audio and video files, accessing XM Satellite Radio, and displaying moving maps. The CJ4 Gen2 steps have been reconfigured with a lower point of entry to assist and ease boarding. The CJ4 Gen2 is the first Citation aircraft to be outfitted with CoolView skylights in the lavatory, which allows continuous sunlight while reflecting the heat.

Textron has successfully continued on the path Cessna had laid so many years ago outlined with reliability and efficiency.
