CESSNA | MODEL 510 | CITATION MUSTANG (2006-2017)

BRIEF HISTORY – CITATION MUSTANG
After Cessna pioneered the entry-level jet and created the market with their Citation 500 (certified in 1970) and the CitationJet (certified in 1992, later more commonly known as the CJ), the purchasing public was on the edge of their seats when Cessna was set to redefine the category once again. Cessna exceeded expectations again, announcing their Model 510 Citation Mustang in 2002.Its first flight took off on April 23rd, 2005 and on November 22nd, 2006 they delivered their first Citation Mustang. It quickly became a massive success in the US and especially abroad, specifically in Europe where it holds the biggest market share for charter flights on Very Light Jet’s (VLJ’s).The Cessna Citation Mustang is an economical Very Light Jet (VLJ) that is part of the immensely successful Citation family. Aimed at turboprop owners such as the King Air 90, the Mustang offers exceptional value in its category. Cessna certainly delivered on its promise of efficiency, performance, and design. Faced with competition from Cessna’s own Citation M2, Cessna discontinued manufacturing of the design in May 2017 due to a lack of client interest for the aircraft. When the M2 was released it would cause sales of the Mustang to be cut almost in half. 40 down to 24. The M2 is a quicker and bigger aircraft, but it can fly from the same length runways as the Mustang and requires the more common C/E-525 type rating, which could also save money on training and crewing. Cessna manufactured a total of 479 units of the Citation Mustang.

CABIN COMFORTS – CITATION MUSTANG
The interior is spacious and comfortable for a small group or family of 2-4 passengers. The Mustang is outfitted with four luxurious chairs in a club configuration (two seats facing the other two seats). The aft chairs even recline 25 degrees so you can recline, recharge, and arrive feeling refreshed!  A privacy curtain conceals a side-facing restroom in between the flight deck and cabin. We would classify this as an “emergency lavatory” only due to its positioning in the cabin and it is concealed with a curtain. Small forward cupboards provide storage for ice and beverages. The cabin features both aft and forward 12 volt DC power outlets, side-stowed tables on either side in the walls, cupholders, and an aft storage compartment between the seats that holds folding armrests and other storage compartments for convenience. The Mustang has an impressive amount of baggage space, including a ski tube that can hold 191cm skis! The overall baggage allowance is 620 pounds and the total capacity is 57 cubic feet and a small 6 cu ft baggage compartment in the cabin. Additionally, the side-facing lavatory may be readily turned into an additional baggage room via a detachable cargo net.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE – CITATION MUSTANG
The Mustang’s efficient performance characteristics are a direct result of the aircraft’s two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F turbofan engines, each of which generates 1,350 pounds of thrust. To begin, Raytheon was the initial buyer for the PW615F E engine, but Citation saw the engine’s potential and made certain they were outfitted on the very first Mustang. The PW600 series greatly reduced purchase and operational costs. These engines are equipped with a FADEC (Full Authority Digital Electrical Control) technology, which makes flight incredibly efficient and straightforward reducing pilots necessary workload to ensure they are more focused and less fatigued. This significantly increases overall safety. With the assistance of the PW615F, the Mustang is capable of cruising at speeds of up to 340 knots. At sea level, the Mustang can utilize a runway for takeoff of only 3,110 feet in length. Following takeoff, the aircraft can quickly climb to 41,000 feet and maintain that altitude for the remainder of the 1,150 nautical mile flight, which is carried by a single pilot and three passengers. All the while keeping the cabin altitude at a comfortable 8,000 feet.

FLIGHT DECK – CITATION MUSTANG
The Mustang is an incredibly straightforward aircraft to operate therefore it is certified for single pilot operation. However, we always recommend two. It features simple Garmin G1000 integrated avionics and numerous automated flight systems. Pilots will be thankful for clear, condensed flat panel displays, which simplify and intuitively enhance the piloting experience. This is a big advantage as it not only supplies massive versatility and adaptability but also substantially cuts operational costs. One also would be remiss if they did not mention the Mustang’s simplistic cockpit which reinforces its position as one of the most cost-effective, single pilot private jets on the market today.
