BRIEF HISTORY – GULFSTREAM G-V

GULFSTREAM G-V (1995-2002)
Gulfstream Aerospace was feeling the pressure in the early 90’s from Bombardier as they had recently announced the Global Express in October of 1991. Gulfstream immediately began redesigning their wildly popular Gulfstream G-IV. They stripped the airframe, stretched the fuselage, extended the wings, and continued to upgrade the remainder of the aircraft from there. The Gulfstream V (G-V or “G-Five”) made its maiden flight on November 28th, 1995, received certification on April 11th, 1997, and made its first delivery shortly after in June of 1997, beating to market its rival the Global Express by 2 years! The Gulfstream G-V was the first Ultra Long Range Business Jet in the world! The G-V’s most noteworthy feature is its 6,500 nautical mile range, thanks to a historical collaboration between BMW and Rolls-Royce with the BR710A1-10 engines. The G-V is capable of flying non-stop between New York and Tokyo.

CABIN COMFORTS – GULFSTREAM G-V
The G-V’s cabin is noticeably larger than its predecessor, providing ample room for passengers for longer haul flights. The G-V cabin measure’s 50’1″ long , 6’2″ high, and 7’3″ wide which allows for easy maneuverability and an unmistakably open ambience. With the G-V having one of the largest cabins on the market, its best utilized by partitioning off zones, most commonly configured into three specialized zones, providing increased privacy. To complement the large cabin, Gulfstream has added the largest (of its time) baggage compartment, boasting a capacity of 226 cubic feet, or 2,500 pounds. This compartment is accessible during flight at or above 40,000 feet. Each seat has a little supplementary storage area. The G-V is equipped with countless creature comforts, including two lavatories, front and aft, for increased privacy for crew and passengers, a full-sized galley capable of serving hot or cold food, power outlets throughout, side-stowed work tables, and multimedia entertainment systems. Despite the G-V’s engines’ strength, the inside is surprisingly quiet, allowing for optimum relaxation or concentration. The cabin is pressurized using a controlled system, which ensures cabin comfort even at extremely high altitudes. The type is rated at 10.2 pounds per square inch and is capable of sustaining cabin pressure at sea level up to 29,200 feet. The aircraft is equipped with a multitude of safety systems boasting a long track record of reliability. Mechanical backup systems and anti-skid wheel brakes provide additional layers of safety for those longer journeys.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE – GULFSTREAM G-V
BMW and Rolls-Royce collaborated to create one of the greatest jet engines of its time, the BR710 engine, each of which generates up to 14,750 pounds of torque. It is lighter and much more fuel efficient than the G-IV engines while producing even more torque. These incredibly strong engines produce more than enough power for the G-V to travel intercontinentally at high speeds and high altitudes. Not only that but due to their strength and reliability, commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 717 were outfitted with them. Impressively, the BR710 was one of the first engines built for the business jet market to have full authority digital engine control (FADEC), a computerized control system capable of accurately regulating power and fuel consumption. The G-V’s incredible 93-foot wingspan can accommodate the aircraft’s entire 41,300-pound maximum fuel capacity, which contributes significantly to the aircraft’s 90,500-pound maximum takeoff weight. The G-V has an incredibly fast climb rate of 2,055 feet per minute, making it to 37,000 feet in just 18 minutes and is certified to fly up to 51,000 feet, above the majority of air traffic and will comfortably cruise around 500 knots. Apart from still being known today for its extraordinary intercontinental range, it is also one of the world’s most trusted business jets, with impressive performance capabilities and a consistent flight history spanning decades. While it has an incredible maximum range of 6,500 nautical miles, what may be more amazing is that it can still fly 5,416 nautical miles with a maximum cargo of 6,600 lbs. Apart from its superior performance, the Gulfstream G-V is one of the most dependable airplanes on the market.

FLIGHT DECK -GULFSTREAM G-V
The Gulfstream G-V’s flight deck is based on the Honeywell SPX-8500 suite. By combining state-of-the-art technology and efficient engine design, Honeywell’s 36-150 auxiliary power unit (APU) is one of the most dependable and best performing APUs on the market. Gulfstream’s G-V also offers pilots with Honeywell’s Primus 440/660/880 weather radar systems, to assist pilots in avoiding hazardous weather situations and increasing their overall situational awareness. A Forward-Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) sensor detects light that is obscured by rain or fog and generates a display in the runway’s cockpit. The display is extremely detailed to ensure the pilots see the runway’s centerline.
