BRIEF HISTORY – PILATUS PC-24

PILATUS PC-24 (2018-PRESENT)
Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. announced the PC-24 in May 2013 and took another 5 years before deliveries would begin in April 2018. Pilatus is a Swiss firm that developed the PC-24 following the enormous success of their single-engine turboprop aircraft, the PC-12. Following customer feedback, Pilatus determined that many customers requested an aircraft with a higher cruising speed and range while retaining the ruggedness of the PC-12. This resulted in the development of the PC-24, one of the industry’s most versatile jets ever manufactured.

NO PAVEMENT? NO PROBLEM.
As it is a one-of-a-kind offering in the business jet sector, a new category of jet needed to be created as it does not strictly fit into any existing aircraft category. It features a long cabin similar to that of a mid-size jet, the performance of a light jet (and cabin height), and the maneuverability of a turboprop. This prompted Pilatus to establish and proclaim a new category for the PC-24, the Super Versatile Jet (SVJ). Reason being is it excels in short-field performance and is capable of operating in and out of dirt, gravel, and turf runways! That’s right, no pavement? No problem!

CABIN COMFORT – PILATUS PC-24
The PC-24 boasts a flat floor design which makes the cabin appear more spacious as well as eases maneuverability through the cabin adorned in plush leathers and exotic hardwood cabinetry with completely custom and curated designs. Once seated, the seats swivel with great mobility and the armrests fold down, all of which ease conversation within the cabin. Naturally, when an aircraft is designated the Super Versatile Jet, one expects it would apply to all areas of the aircraft, including the cabin. Other than charter, this aircraft is utilized for countless other missions and can be equipped exclusively for medical evacuations, freight, or even as a 10-seater for commuting services. Typically, a business jet configuration will have either six or eight seats.Passengers are able to use their phone, tablet, or laptop to connect to the PC-24’s server. Once connected, you can manage the cabin’s lighting and temperature, track the flight in Airshow, and consume media stored locally on the server. Without having to leave your seat, you have access to power and USB ports, cup holders, multiple small storage spaces, and even an entrance cupboard. The PC-24 is designed to keep you comfortable on even the longest of flights. By the main entry, you will see a sink and once you close off a door to the cabin and flight deck, you have a fully enclosed lavatory. The Pilatus PC-24 has a cabin volume of 501 cubic feet and a luggage compartment of 90 cubic feet (along with a cargo door large enough to accommodate a pallet).

POWER AND PERFORMANCE – PILATUS PC-24
The Pilatus PC-24 is powered by two Williams FJ44-4A turbofan engines mounted at the rear, each producing 3,420 lbf of thrust (6,840 lbf total). These engines are capable of rocketing the aircraft to a top cruise speed of 440 knots and a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles. The take-off and landing distances, which are just 2,930 and 2,375 feet, respectively, are top of its class. These numbers even beat most smaller turbo prop aircraft. The benefit of these figures is that the PC-24 can reach significantly more airports than any other aircraft of its size. For example, there are more than 11,500 paved airports worldwide with a take-off distance of 2,930 feet. When you include airports that are at least 2,930 feet in length and unpaved (grass or gravel), the total number of accessible airports nearly doubles. While the PC-24 does not fly quicker than its competitors, it does save overall travel time by allowing you to depart and arrive closer to your final destination and by utilizing smaller airports with less administrative formalities. All of these will result in the shortest possible ground time.

FLIGHT DECK – PILATUS PC-24
All Pilatus aircraft, including the PC-24, are certified for single pilot operations (two pilots with CharterJets Inc.), which is surprisingly rare in this category of aircraft. Pilatus accomplished this by integrating a streamlined and simplified cockpit layout with all the latest automation technology.  The cockpit has been designed to minimize the excessive pilot’s movements, thus decreasing pilot workload and boosting safety along with situational awareness. The PC-24 is equipped with Pilatus’ Advanced Cockpit Environment (ACETM). The Pilatus PC-24 is one of the most innovative and pilot-friendly cockpits in business aviation today. It’s equipped with four 12-inch displays that enable the pilots to organize and present all pertinent information in the most effective manner possible. A Synthetic Vision System, Auto-throttle, Graphical Flight Planning, Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS II), and Localizer Performance with Vertical (LPV) guidance capability are all featured in the Pilatus ACETM.
