5 REASONS WHY THE CITATION M2 IS NOT AN UPGRADED CITATION MUSTANG

Get an Instant Quote

There is a common misconception in regards to two of Cessna’s Very Light Jets, the Citation Mustang and the Citation M2. As the Mustang was completed first, it makes sense if Cessna was going to release an updated version of the Mustang, the “M2” would be right on brand for them, however, this is not the case. Outlined below are 5 reasons why the Citation M2 is not a refurbished variant of the Citation Mustang.

AIRFRAME
Although the M2 is intended to be the next step up when upgrading from the Mustang, it uses the airframe from the original CitationJet Series, or Model 525. Reason being, the CitationJet went out-of-production around the same time the M2 was being designed and developed which made it easy for the M2 to utilize the CitationJet’s production line.

PURE THRUST
The M2 has recently redesigned turbofan engines that are more powerful and efficient. The FJ44-1AP-21 engines offer 15% more thrust as well as an additional 5% for hot-and-high conditions (Hot temperatures and /or high altitudes). The M2’s impressive climb rate is nearly 700 feet more than the Mustang, measuring in at 3,698 feet per minute.

SIZE MATTERS
While the M2 is often mistaken at first glance for the Mustang or vice-versa, it has some additional cabin space that makes a big difference. The M2 is an additional two inches wider, three inches taller, and a foot and a half longer. This additional space truly opens up the cabin with its additional windows which allows the M2 to accommodate its passengers in superior comfort.

LEFT IT IN THE DUST
While the Mustang was impressive in its own right when it was first delivered, it was soon overshadowed by the outstanding performance on the M2, boasting an additional 60 knots of cruise speed.

LEFT 200 NAUTICAL MILES IN THE DUST
Thanks in part to a redesigned wing that is 4 inches wider with its winglets as well as its more powerful and efficient engines, the M2 is able to outfly the Mustang’s range by an additional 200 nautical miles! It is easy to see why most think that the Citation M2 is an upgraded Mustang as they look somewhat similar at first glance. If you look a little closer you will notice the window shaping on each aircraft. The Mustang has windows that are shaped similar to sideways ovals while the M2 has taller, more squared windows. With a quick glance at their spec sheets it is clear to see the Citation M2 is a far superior aircraft.
